Uttarkashi: To battle the declining child sex ratio in Uttarkashi district, the administration has marked 132 villages under red zone and has put local accredited social health activist (ASHA) workers on its radar.

The action was taken after report of the past three months on child birth revealed that not a single girl child was born in 132 villages of the district which delivered a total of 216 boys.

According to the 2011 census, there were 1,61,489 women compared to 1,68,597 men in Uttarkashi. Later campaigns were organised by government agencies to improve the sex ratio.

However, data of the last three months has highlighted the possibility of female foeticide in the district.

According to the data provided by the state health department, out of 51 deliveries in 27 villages of Dunda block not a single girl child has born in the past three months. Similarly, in Bhatwari (49 child births in 27 villages), Naugaun (47 births in 28 villages), Mori (29 births in 20 villages), Chinyalisaur (23 births in 16 villages) and Purola block (17 births in 14 villages) not a single girl child was born.

“According to the data collected by the health department, we have discovered that out of total 216 deliveries not a single girl child has born in 132 villages, which is suspicious and has highlighted female foeticide”, said Uttarkashi’s DM Ashish Chauhan.
