Imphal: The Manipur Women's Commission has said it is imperative to hold an in-depth police investigation into the April 3 murder of Satyabhama Ningombam.

Talking to journalists here, Chairperson Ibetombi Irengbam said the police should interact with the bereaved family, local residents and employees of the Pathology department of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences here, where Sayabhama was a research fellow.

The post-mortem report should be properly studied and if a watertight case was built, the accused could not make inconsistent statements.

Earlier, Director-General of Police Joykumar Yumnam gave a clean chit to two of the three arrested persons.

Quoting one of the accused, the DGP said the slain research scholar was pregnant. But this claim is not reflected in the post mortem report, it is said.

Alleging loose ends in the case, Sobita Mangshatabam, co-convener of the United NGOs Mission Manipur, said the time between the first alleged physical intimacy between Satyabhama and James Toijam, one of the arrested persons, and the recovery of her body was too short a period to establish pregnancy.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed on Saturday at Yairipok in Thoubal district following the lynching of a Muslim youth on Friday night. He was allegedly caught with a divorcee inside a kitchen.

The police say the situation is fully under control. Muslim youth blocked roads by burning old tyres and logs.

Some Muslim organisations, in association with a Joint Action Committee, began a general strike to seek punishment for the persons who had bludgeoned Mohammad Sana of Phoudel. Until the perpetrators were arrested, the body would not be claimed, the JAC told journalists.
