AHMEDABAD: The recently released United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) report on child marriages shows that Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Telangana have high prevalence of child marriages. The report, "Reducing Child Marriage in India A Model to Scale up Results", mentions Gujarat's Patan among districts with highest numbers of child marriages in India, along with other such districts from states like Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Telangana.

In Gujarat 1,00,143 girls in the age group of 10-14 years were married off, while some 4,183 girls were widowed, 1,596 were separated soon after marriage, and 811 children, who may have been in their sixth standard, were divorced. Of the total population of 28.65 lakh children in that age group (10-14 years) nearly 3.7% were married.

Gujarat has the highest number, 811, of underage brides in the age group of 10-14 years, who are divorced. The only other state that comes close is West Bengal with 760 girls divorced at this age, the report claims. The report was prepared by Jyotsna Jha, Puja Minni, Shanmuga Priya and Debanita Chatterjee from the Centre for Budget and Policy Studies in Bangalore.

In states like Rajasthan and Gujarat, child marriage is strongly associated with caste membership, and in some districts, child marriage rates are highest among upper caste girls. The practice of Atta-Satta in Gujarat - a practice of one set of brother and sister being married to another set of brother and sister - is explained as one such widely prevalent practice. "The declining sex ratio in the state has forced communities to marry off their children as soon as they find a suitable alliance," claims the study.

Another major reason for the situation, claims the report, is the declining number of government secondary schools. Only 69 girls are enrolled at secondary level schools in Gujarat for every 100 boys. The gap exists across all social groups, but it's higher among OBCs and Muslims claims the report.

"The gap widens if one considers boys and girls appearing for class 10 examinations. Though pass percentages is higher for girls, the number of girls taking the class 10 examination is lower for all social groups, the gap being widest for OBCs," claims the report.
