India on Wednesday decried attempts to divert food grains for bio-fuels. “Diversion of grain for fuel is a dangerous trend,” Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said at the World Economic Forum meeting here.

Addressing a session on energy security, Mr. Sharma said diversion of food grains for bio-fuels cannot “subvert” the need for food security.

“The cost of food in India has been on a rise over the past year and in early January food inflation was hovering around 17 per cent,” he said.

Responding to a point that India and China are increasing their energy consumption adding to the climate change, he said the share of emerging economies in the global energy usage was very little.

Of the 1.5 trillion people being denied access to commercial energy, 500 million people live in India. India is focusing on developing nuclear and non-conventional energy sources and has set an ambitious target to generate 20,000 MW of nuclear energy by 2020.

Mr. Sharma said this issue was not properly addressed at the Copenhagen Summit and if only mercantile interests were allowed to steer the agenda, it would not be in the interest of the global good. — PTI
