India was ranked 46 in the Climate Risk Index (CRI) table for 2012, a position definitely better than 18, the rank that it had in the period between 1993 and 2012, a report released at the Conference of the Parties on Tuesday said. But even with 1,168 deaths (in 2012) as compared to 3,141 deaths on average per year (between 1993 and 2012), India continued to be ranked second in the global death toll tally.

However, this year, with the Uttarakhand disaster (June) and the Cyclone Phailin (October) resulting in severe loss and damage, India might climb higher for the 2013 rankings. The report talks about long term damages (between 1993 and 2012) and then the latest for the year 2012 to analyse the impact of extreme weather events.

Worldwide, more than 5.3 lakh people died as a direct result of about 15,000 extreme weather events between 1993 and 2012, Germanwatch, a policy advisor body and think tank said.

The report, authored by Sonke Kreft and David Eckstein, analysed the quantified impacts of extreme weather events - both in terms of fatalities as well as economic losses.

The countries affected most in 2012 were Haiti, the Philippines and Pakistan while for the period from 1993 to 2012, Honduras, Myanmar and Haiti ranked the highest.
