PUNE: The surplus rainfall recorded by the country so far this season has come down to 11% above normal, as on Friday, from the 17% above normal recorded by end-July.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the reduced rainfall activity to factors like a continuing absence of an offshore trough along the west coast and a weak monsoon current. "There has been rainfall in most parts of the country but the intensity of rain has come down significantly," IMD's senior scientist, S B Gaonkar, told TOI.

A total of 781.3mm rain was recorded between June 1 and August 30, which is 74.6mm in excess of the normal rain of 706.7mm for the same period. East and northeast India continues to face a rainfall deficiency of 29% while the northwest, central and south peninsular India have received 21%, 29% and 16% surplus rain, respectively.

Almost 87% of the country's geographical area has received excess to normal rainfall while the remaining 13% area continues to face deficiency. The east and northeastern states account for most of these deficient areas.

The IMD's weekly update on Friday said the monsoon trough will remain north of its normal position on many days of the forthcoming week. This augurs well in terms of more rainfall for the northern states as well as parts of east and northeastern states.

During the week between August 22 and 28, there were two low pressure areas that caused heavy to very heavy rainfall mainly over Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. "The all India weekly rainfall for the week was the lowest of the season so far," the update said. The rainfall activity was near normal only over central India and deficient for the rest of the country.
