India has 414 death row convicts: National Crime Records Bureau -Ch Sushil Rao

HYDERABAD: There are as many as 414 death row convicts in jails across the country. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has reported that there as are many as 106 death penalty convicts are in jails in Uttar Pradesh. Those on the death row in other states include 63 in Karnataka, 51 in Maharashtra, 42 in Bihar, 27 in Delhi, 19 in Gujarat, 16 in Punjab, 14 in Kerala, 12 in Tamil Nadu, and 10 each in Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh.

As many as 97 persons were awarded death penalty by various courts in the country with as many as 25 capital punishments handed over in Uttar Pradesh itself in the year 2012. Death penalty was awarded to 12 accused in Bihar, nine in Delhi, eight in Karnataka, seven in Madhya Pradesh and six in Assam last year.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has reported that 54.1 per cent of all prisoners in the country's jails are undergoing a life term. Most of those undergoing a life term were convicted for murder which accounted for 59 per cent. Out of the 1,10,001 accused convicted under IPC crimes, 64,949 were convicted on murder charges. The highest number of murder convictions was also reported from Uttar Pradesh with 17.6 per cent.

Further, the NCRB also reported that during the year 2012 the death sentence of 61 convicts was commuted to life imprisonment - 14 in UP, seven in Harayana, six in West Bengal, five in Madhya Pradesh, four each in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. One death row convict was executed in Maharashtra.

Compared to the national average of 54.1 per cent prisoners undergoing life sentences in the country, there are as many as 12 states and two union territories where the figure is much higher than the national average. These include Daman and Diu (92.9 %), Kharkhand (74.7 %), Andhra Pradesh (70.7 %), Chhattisgarh (69.9%), Madhya Pradesh (66.8 %), Karnataka (64.7 %), Puducherry (64.2 %), Bihar (62.7 %), Assam (59.1 %), Tripura (58.8 %), Jammu & Kashmir (56.6 %), and Rajasthan (56.3 %).
