India Hits Its UN Poverty-Cutting Target, but Misses Others -Vibhuti Agarwal

India is on track to cut poverty in half by the end of this year, compared to 2000 levels, but needs to do more to improve education and empower women, a United Nations report said Wednesday.

In 2000, India along with 189 member countries of the United Nations charted out an ambitious agenda - the Millennium Development Goals, or MDG - to free millions of people from poverty and hunger by the end of 2015, and to improve access to health and education. A new set of goals will be adopted by world leaders in September.

While India has made "notable progress" toward reaching the goals, its success at some goals "varies," according to the report, "India and the MDGs-Towards a Sustainable Future for All."
