Health is wealth, goes the adage. For confirmation, check how much India loses to illness every year, and compare it with China.

While China loses 15,279 healthy years per one lakh population per annum on account of illness and disability, the corresponding figure for India stands at 27,316, around 80% higher. India's performance on this crucial health indicator — which is also a proxy for labour productivity — appears gloomy even when compared to emerging economies in Latin America. While Brazil boasts of a loss of only 19,475 years, Venezuela, Mexico and Paraguay lose less than 17,000 years, say World Health Organisation statistics.

Explaining the fundamental factors behind the gap, Muralidharan Nair, partner at Ernst & Young said: “If one disaggregates the indicator further into the number of years claimed by communicable and non-communicable diseases, one would observe that the disappointing performance of India vis-a-vis other emerging economies can largely be attributed to its dismal performance in the years lost to communicable diseases. This underlines the lack of infrastructure and amenities at the primary healthcare level.”

While China loses only 2,429 healthy life years per one lakh population to communicable diseases in a year, India's loss is almost six times higher at 12,004 years. The burden of non-communicable diseases taking a toll on healthy work years between the two countries doesn't show such sharp divergence. While India's loss on account of non-communicable disease stand at 15,312, China's comparable loss is estimated to be 12,850 years.

Other basic health indicators also corroborate the contrast between the levels of primary health care between China and India. While infant mortality rate of China is close to 18 per 1,000 live births, the same for India stand at over 52, according to World Bank statistics. The asymmetry is equally reflected in maternal mortality rates (India: 154- 395 and China: 35-46 per one lakh live births in 2008). The variation is clearly driven by poverty-related indicators such as acute ailments and poor sanitary conditions among a host of others, said Nair.

At this rate, premature deaths caused by diabetes, heart disease and stroke will cause a loss of $236 billion of national income over the next 10 years. Improvement in healthcare access and a 20% reduction in 'healthy working years lost' could translate into annual gains of over $100 billion from 2020 onwards, projects Rana Mehta, vice-president, healthcare, Technopak Advisors. The loss of healthy work years in developed economies such the US, UK, Australia and Canada are around 12,000 years or lower
