India has provided employment to 1.79 crore households under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in 2010.

Information and confirmation to this effect was made by Indian Minister of State for Rural Development Pradeep Jain said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that As of 30th June, a total of 179,43,189 families in the country have been provided employment under MGNREGS.

According to the state-wise data presented by the Minister, Andhra Pradesh tops the list of states where most number of families were given employment this year, followed by Rajasthan, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

While a total of 48,04,559 households in Andhra Pradesh have benefited from the scheme, 25,01,792 families in Rajasthan, 22,055,89 in West Bengal and 19,959,50 families in Uttar Pradesh were given job opportunities this year.

Pointing out the reasons why this scheme has failed in some states, the Minister said: "Mahatma Gandhi NREGA is demand based. A job seeker has to apply for work for getting employment under the Act."

"Feedback from states indicates that the main areas of concern are deployment of qualified and dedicated staff at block and gram panchayat level," Jain added.

He also said that there is need to strengthen banks and post office in rural areas besides improving awareness about the scheme to achieve more success.
