According to recent estimates by the World Health Organisation (WHO) there's been a sharp drop in the number of polio cases this year as compared to the last.

"This is the biggest drop we have seen in the last six years," said Dr J S Bhasin.

The number of cases of type-1 polio is only 16 this year as compared to 51 last year, while type-3 cases stand at 23 against last year's 343, according to the WHO

It's a huge drop if you compare this to last year - a total of 394 cases, including 51 cases are of type 1 polio cases and 343 type 3 polio strains.

"This is largely been due to the effective surveillance and an effective vaccination drive. Both monovalent and bivalent vaccines have been effective against both type1 and type 2 polio viruses.

Two national immunization rounds have been held since January this year (2010) and high-risk areas in the country have received two additional vaccination rounds.

Still some way to go though, the WHO says a nation cannot be declared polio-free unless there are no fresh cases reported for three consecutive years and India's polio eradication deadline has already been extended thrice by over eight years.
