Ashodaya Samiti, a sex workers' collective in Mysore, has for the first time tied up with foreign universities and institutions to conduct a comprehensive research on improving women's Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) in India and in Africa.

Ashodaya Samiti has joined a consortium consisting of universities and institutions in five countries, of which three are in Africa, to conduct SRH research services through identifying best practices in delivering a combined package of interventions for general population women and female sex workers.

The consortium consists of Universiteit Gent International Centre For Reproductive Health (UG-ICRH), Belgium, International Centre For Reproductive Health Association, Kenya, International Centre for Reproductive Health Association, Mozambique, University of Witwatrersrand, South Africa and University College of London.

Ashodaya Samiti, a sex workers' community based organisation consisting over 7,000 members from three districts of Mysore, Mandya and Hassan in Karnataka, has been involved in HIV prevention programmes through community empowerment model and is recognised by World Health Organisation as a learning site.

"The research is aimed at targeted intervention for female sex workers and also general women to improve their SRH," it said in a statement. The project -- Diagonal Interventions to Fast Forward enhanced Reproductive Health (DIFFER) -- is a specific international cooperation action collaborative project expected to strengthen SRH in India.

The project, with the help of Ashodaya Samiti, would develop a model specific to India and would focus on two channels for delivering improved SRH services.

The first channel would be through public facilities at district or primary level where women are already receiving some services, such as Family Planning and HIV counseling and testing, the statement said.

The second would be through interventions designed with and for female sex workers in the communities where they work, through outreach and special mobile or satellite clinics.

According to Bhagya, Director of Ashodaya Samiti, this research project, started last month, was an "honour" to a sex worker collective that is fighting stigma and discrimination. She felt the community would be benefited with this kind of association.
