AHMEDABAD: Indian women take up jobs with the ambition to climb to the top, says a survey by the website Paycheck India. In the survey, 91% women said that their most important consideration while looking for a job is future career prospects. They would also like their job to be a challenging one, the respondents said. In conclusion, the survey says that Indian women expect to grow when they enter the labour market.

They are also willing to take a chance and break away from stereotypes. In a break from the past, as many as 85% women said that they are willing to take up careers that require greater responsibility and not jobs traditionally considered suitable for women.

A total of 4,698 female respondents from across India completed the online questionnaire for the survey conducted over seven years between 2006 and 2013. Paycheck India is a website managed by Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) professor Biju Varkkey as part of a study funded by research organisations in the European Union (EU).

Given the social constraints that women face in India and the gender bias among employers favouring men, 70% of the women surveyed preferred permanent jobs over temporary contracts.

For 80% of the women, social status is as important a factor as it is for men while considering a job. Also, about 78% of the women expect a decent salary for their work.

The survey further shows that Indian women understand well the importance of investment in human capital for growth and sustainability. Hence 71% of the respondents indicated that on-the-job training was a must.

"People in general prefer shorter distances while travelling to their offices. Therefore, 73% of the women respondents give commuting time high preference. This also helps them to achieve a better work-life balance," says the survey.

For 81% of the women, suitable working hours are important, with 70% women giving flexible work hours high priority.

"Women in India are expected to fulfill the primary responsibility of taking care of the house and children. Hence they prefer social and fixed working hours. Women find it difficult to maintain balance between work and family if they are forced to work late. The fact that 75% of women gave utmost importance to work-family combination reinforces the statement mentioned above," the survey explains.

The survey also reveals an interesting finding that Indian women are no longer interested only in part-time jobs. Around 37% of the respondents did not consider it important while 41% considered it unimportant. The rest were neutral on this matter.

A good working environment results in higher job satisfaction. For 72% women, friendly co-workers are essential while considering a job.
