Nearly 110 students of different classes packed in the hostel for tribals which has a capacity of only 75 are living in inhuman conditions and are facing food, accommodation and sanitation problems.

Chandrakant Pandey, organiser of Vidarbha unit of Council for Human Rights, has sought the attention of the people's representatives towards the pathetic condition of the hostel being run by Integrated Tribal Development Corporation, Deori.

This correspondent found during a visit to the hostel on Tuesday morning that a two students were sleeping on many cots, facing inconvenience. Even the pump that supplied water was not working. Students complained that though the contractor was paid Rs 1,350 per student per month, the quantity of food was not adequate and was not served keeping timing of the school and college in mind. The quality of rice and wheat used in meals was not good while the 'chapatis' were hard.

Students said that the then project officer Badole had promised to change the contractor, but it did not materialise after his retirement. Students demanded that either a care-taker should be appointed or a committee of students formed to keep a watch on the quality of meals and facilities at the hostel. They felt that food could be cooked twice or thrice depending on the timing of classes as there are more than 100 students. Non-availability of reference book was another problem especially when the examinations are round the corner.

Warden SV Thete said that congestion was inevitable as the number of students accommodated in the hostel was more. He blamed the landlord for not cooperating in solving the drinking water and sanitation problems. He said that he had paid Rs 5,500 from his pocket for the repairs of bore machine which was yet to be reimbursed. He said he had to pay Rs 8,500 for further repairs.

The hostel, established in 1989, has a strength of 75 which was increased to 250 since 2003, he said. Thete admitted that although food quota was increased since it is pro rata, rest of the facilities were lacking. About reference books, he said that these have to be purchased from approved shops in Nagpur since they give concessions. As the end of academic session is nearing, there is a problem of availability of books, he said.

Thete said that there are two attendants to take care of sanitation. However, he claimed, some students were deliberately damaging equipment and utensils to create unrest among others.
