                            <div align="justify">-The Times of India<br /><br />A staggering range of commonly used chemicals - from insecticides to plastic additives to some common medications - are likely to cause cancer even in very low amounts. This was the conclusion reached by a massive study involving 174 scientists from 28 countries -- including India -- who researched the chemical actions of these chemicals. The study says that it is possible the combined effect of many of these chemicals working simultaneously may further enhance the risk of cancers developing.<br /><br />This is the first study of its kind that investigated cancer causing pathways of common chemicals otherwise not known to be carcinogenic, that is, cancer causing.<br /><br />The researchers investigated 85 chemicals for their effect on 11 essential features that define cancer. Of them, 50 were found to have a low dose effect on cancer causing features, called 'hallmarks of cancer'. Another 13 had a threshold dose beyond which they started having cancer generating effects. Put together, these dangerous chemicals made up nearly three quarters (74%) of the chemicals studied. The remaining 22 chemicals were not found to have any known effects.<br /><br />Some of the commonly used chemicals discovered to have cancer causing potential include various popular insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, additives to plastic, PVC and polycarbonate products like food containers and water bottles, biocides used in handwashes and cosmetics, some commonly used drugs like phenobarbital and acetaminophen, flame retardants used in paints, construction material, aircrafts, etc., and stain repellants used in fabrics and carpets.<br /><br />&quot;The idea was to try to avoid chemicals that are known to cause cancer (i.e. carcinogenic) but to focus on everyday chemicals from pesticides, herbicides, BPA in plastics, phthalate, etc. and to look for evidence (from literature) on perturbation on any one of the hallmarks of cancer,&quot; Hemad Yasaei, professor at Brunel University, London, and one of the co-authors, told TOI.<br /><br />The research only shows that there is a possibility that these chemicals may cause cancer once accumulated in the body, Yasaei clarified.<br /><br />&quot;We are not claiming that these compounds listed in this review are causing cancer. We are hypothesising that they may have the possibility to initiate cancer when aggregated in the body at low doses. But further research is needed to prove this hypothesis,&quot; he stressed.<br /><br />Many of these chemicals like BPA (used in plastics) or triclosan, used in toothpastes, are known to have other ill-effects on human health. But their cancer causing potential has come as a surprise to many.<br /><br />The study investigated the chemicals by checking out previous research on how they behave in relation to the so-called hallmarks of cancer, which include the ability of cancer cells to multiply indefinitely, resist aging, creating disturbance in metabolism, developing genetic mutations, and others.<br /><br />The paper, published in the cancer journal Carcinogenesis published by Oxford University Press, argues that the dominant global approach towards finding out what causes cancer and what does not suffers from serious limitations because it looks at each chemical separately and asks whether it causes cancer.<br /><br />Calling the WHO's International Program for Chemical Safety (IPCS) &quot;highly restrictive&quot;, the paper argues that it is working in close collaboration with the International Life Sciences Institute, whose &quot;members comprised largely of major corporate interests from the food and beverage, agricultural, chemical and pharmaceutical industries&quot;. While their focus is on preventing 'misidentification' of common chemicals as cancer causing, it &quot;discourages regulatory agencies from exploring the sorts of synergies that might plausibly be expected to occur&quot;. In other words, the possibilities of accumulated danger from low dose effects of a combination of these widely used chemicals is not studied by such institutions. <br /></div>

                            <div align="justify">-The Times of India<br /><br />A staggering range of commonly used chemicals - from insecticides to plastic additives to some common medications - are likely to cause cancer even in very low amounts. This was the conclusion reached by a massive study involving 174 scientists from 28 countries -- including India -- who researched the chemical actions of these chemicals. The study says that it is possible the combined effect of many of these chemicals working simultaneously may further enhance the risk of cancers developing.<br /><br />This is the first study of its kind that investigated cancer causing pathways of common chemicals otherwise not known to be carcinogenic, that is, cancer causing.<br /><br />The researchers investigated 85 chemicals for their effect on 11 essential features that define cancer. Of them, 50 were found to have a low dose effect on cancer causing features, called 'hallmarks of cancer'. Another 13 had a threshold dose beyond which they started having cancer generating effects. Put together, these dangerous chemicals made up nearly three quarters (74%) of the chemicals studied. The remaining 22 chemicals were not found to have any known effects.<br /><br />Some of the commonly used chemicals discovered to have cancer causing potential include various popular insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, additives to plastic, PVC and polycarbonate products like food containers and water bottles, biocides used in handwashes and cosmetics, some commonly used drugs like phenobarbital and acetaminophen, flame retardants used in paints, construction material, aircrafts, etc., and stain repellants used in fabrics and carpets.<br /><br />&quot;The idea was to try to avoid chemicals that are known to cause cancer (i.e. carcinogenic) but to focus on everyday chemicals from pesticides, herbicides, BPA in plastics, phthalate, etc. and to look for evidence (from literature) on perturbation on any one of the hallmarks of cancer,&quot; Hemad Yasaei, professor at Brunel University, London, and one of the co-authors, told TOI.<br /><br />The research only shows that there is a possibility that these chemicals may cause cancer once accumulated in the body, Yasaei clarified.<br /><br />&quot;We are not claiming that these compounds listed in this review are causing cancer. We are hypothesising that they may have the possibility to initiate cancer when aggregated in the body at low doses. But further research is needed to prove this hypothesis,&quot; he stressed.<br /><br />Many of these chemicals like BPA (used in plastics) or triclosan, used in toothpastes, are known to have other ill-effects on human health. But their cancer causing potential has come as a surprise to many.<br /><br />The study investigated the chemicals by checking out previous research on how they behave in relation to the so-called hallmarks of cancer, which include the ability of cancer cells to multiply indefinitely, resist aging, creating disturbance in metabolism, developing genetic mutations, and others.<br /><br />The paper, published in the cancer journal Carcinogenesis published by Oxford University Press, argues that the dominant global approach towards finding out what causes cancer and what does not suffers from serious limitations because it looks at each chemical separately and asks whether it causes cancer.<br /><br />Calling the WHO's International Program for Chemical Safety (IPCS) &quot;highly restrictive&quot;, the paper argues that it is working in close collaboration with the International Life Sciences Institute, whose &quot;members comprised largely of major corporate interests from the food and beverage, agricultural, chemical and pharmaceutical industries&quot;. While their focus is on preventing 'misidentification' of common chemicals as cancer causing, it &quot;discourages regulatory agencies from exploring the sorts of synergies that might plausibly be expected to occur&quot;. In other words, the possibilities of accumulated danger from low dose effects of a combination of these widely used chemicals is not studied by such institutions. <br /></div>

                            <div align="justify">-The Times of India<br /><br />A staggering range of commonly used chemicals - from insecticides to plastic additives to some common medications - are likely to cause cancer even in very low amounts. This was the conclusion reached by a massive study involving 174 scientists from 28 countries -- including India -- who researched the chemical actions of these chemicals. The study says that it is possible the combined effect of many of these chemicals working simultaneously may further enhance the risk of cancers developing.<br /><br />This is the first study of its kind that investigated cancer causing pathways of common chemicals otherwise not known to be carcinogenic, that is, cancer causing.<br /><br />The researchers investigated 85 chemicals for their effect on 11 essential features that define cancer. Of them, 50 were found to have a low dose effect on cancer causing features, called 'hallmarks of cancer'. Another 13 had a threshold dose beyond which they started having cancer generating effects. Put together, these dangerous chemicals made up nearly three quarters (74%) of the chemicals studied. The remaining 22 chemicals were not found to have any known effects.<br /><br />Some of the commonly used chemicals discovered to have cancer causing potential include various popular insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, additives to plastic, PVC and polycarbonate products like food containers and water bottles, biocides used in handwashes and cosmetics, some commonly used drugs like phenobarbital and acetaminophen, flame retardants used in paints, construction material, aircrafts, etc., and stain repellants used in fabrics and carpets.<br /><br />&quot;The idea was to try to avoid chemicals that are known to cause cancer (i.e. carcinogenic) but to focus on everyday chemicals from pesticides, herbicides, BPA in plastics, phthalate, etc. and to look for evidence (from literature) on perturbation on any one of the hallmarks of cancer,&quot; Hemad Yasaei, professor at Brunel University, London, and one of the co-authors, told TOI.<br /><br />The research only shows that there is a possibility that these chemicals may cause cancer once accumulated in the body, Yasaei clarified.<br /><br />&quot;We are not claiming that these compounds listed in this review are causing cancer. We are hypothesising that they may have the possibility to initiate cancer when aggregated in the body at low doses. But further research is needed to prove this hypothesis,&quot; he stressed.<br /><br />Many of these chemicals like BPA (used in plastics) or triclosan, used in toothpastes, are known to have other ill-effects on human health. But their cancer causing potential has come as a surprise to many.<br /><br />The study investigated the chemicals by checking out previous research on how they behave in relation to the so-called hallmarks of cancer, which include the ability of cancer cells to multiply indefinitely, resist aging, creating disturbance in metabolism, developing genetic mutations, and others.<br /><br />The paper, published in the cancer journal Carcinogenesis published by Oxford University Press, argues that the dominant global approach towards finding out what causes cancer and what does not suffers from serious limitations because it looks at each chemical separately and asks whether it causes cancer.<br /><br />Calling the WHO's International Program for Chemical Safety (IPCS) &quot;highly restrictive&quot;, the paper argues that it is working in close collaboration with the International Life Sciences Institute, whose &quot;members comprised largely of major corporate interests from the food and beverage, agricultural, chemical and pharmaceutical industries&quot;. While their focus is on preventing 'misidentification' of common chemicals as cancer causing, it &quot;discourages regulatory agencies from exploring the sorts of synergies that might plausibly be expected to occur&quot;. In other words, the possibilities of accumulated danger from low dose effects of a combination of these widely used chemicals is not studied by such institutions. <br /></div>

Is cancer hiding in your home? 28-nation study flags common drugs, chemicals -Subodh Varma

-The Times of India A staggering range of commonly used chemicals - from insecticides to plastic additives to some common medications - are likely to cause cancer even in very low amounts. This was the conclusion reached by a massive study involving 174 scientists from 28 countries -- including India -- who researched the chemical actions of these chemicals. The study says that it is possible the combined effect of many of these chemicals working simultaneously may further enhance the risk of cancers developing. This is the first study of its kind that investigated cancer causing pathways of common chemicals otherwise not known to be carcinogenic, that is, cancer causing. The researchers investigated 85 chemicals for their effect on 11 essential features that define cancer. Of them, 50 were found to have a low dose effect on cancer causing features, called 'hallmarks of cancer'. Another 13 had a threshold dose beyond which they started having cancer generating effects. Put together, these dangerous chemicals made up nearly three quarters (74%) of the chemicals studied. The remaining 22 chemicals were not found to have any known effects. Some of the commonly used chemicals discovered to have cancer causing potential include various popular insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, additives to plastic, PVC and polycarbonate products like food containers and water bottles, biocides used in handwashes and cosmetics, some commonly used drugs like phenobarbital and acetaminophen, flame retardants used in paints, construction material, aircrafts, etc., and stain repellants used in fabrics and carpets. "The idea was to try to avoid chemicals that are known to cause cancer (i.e. carcinogenic) but to focus on everyday chemicals from pesticides, herbicides, BPA in plastics, phthalate, etc. and to look for evidence (from literature) on perturbation on any one of the hallmarks of cancer," Hemad Yasaei, professor at Brunel University, London, and one of the co-authors, told TOI. The research only shows that there is a possibility that these chemicals may cause cancer once accumulated in the body, Yasaei clarified. "We are not claiming that these compounds listed in this review are causing cancer. We are hypothesising that they may have the possibility to initiate cancer when aggregated in the body at low doses. But further research is needed to prove this hypothesis," he stressed. Many of these chemicals like BPA (used in plastics) or triclosan, used in toothpastes, are known to have other ill-effects on human health. But their cancer causing potential has come as a surprise to many. The study investigated the chemicals by checking out previous research on how they behave in relation to the so-called hallmarks of cancer, which include the ability of cancer cells to multiply indefinitely, resist aging, creating disturbance in metabolism, developing genetic mutations, and others. The paper, published in the cancer journal Carcinogenesis published by Oxford University Press, argues that the dominant global approach towards finding out what causes cancer and what does not suffers from serious limitations because it looks at each chemical separately and asks whether it causes cancer. Calling the WHO's International Program for Chemical Safety (IPCS) "highly restrictive", the paper argues that it is working in close collaboration with the International Life Sciences Institute, whose "members comprised largely of major corporate interests from the food and beverage, agricultural, chemical and pharmaceutical industries". While their focus is on preventing 'misidentification' of common chemicals as cancer causing, it "discourages regulatory agencies from exploring the sorts of synergies that might plausibly be expected to occur". In other words, the possibilities of accumulated danger from low dose effects of a combination of these widely used chemicals is not studied by such institutions.
