A journalist and his cameraman, who were working on a story on illegal mining in the region, were allegedly assaulted by goons of local mining mafia when they had gone for coverage at a village here.

The duo, working with a local news channel, had gone for coverage in Nibhore village here on Friday night when the incident took place, SP Umesh Chand Dutta said, adding that the accused Rajpal and Girdhari were arrested yesterday.

The reporter, however, has alleged they were not only beaten, but the goons also held them captive and snatched their camera.

"We were kidnapped and held hostage for about an hour. They also snatched our camera but the police is not registering our complaint under appropriate sections," he alleged.

SP Dutta, when contacted over the journalist's charges, said probe under a senior police official has been ordered to look into the allegations.
