Vijayapura (Karnataka): The desire of the people of North Karnataka to have Jowar under Public Distribution System (PDS) is not going to be met this year too owing to acute shortage of Jowar in the market.

"In all likelihood, the people of NK will not get their staple diet in their monthly ration because of the unavailability of adequate quantity of Jowar for procurement", said Dinesh Gundurao, the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies.

Addressing presspersons before visiting Jowar procurement centres in Vijayapura here on Wednesday, he said that despite the government offering Rs. 2000/quintal Minimum Support Price (MSP) the Jowar is not available enough to meet the demand.

The Minister admitted that one of the reasons for the farmers to not sell Jowar at procurement centres was the price variation of Jowar in open market.

"During my tour to various NK district including Gadad, Haveri and Bagalkot, I came to know that the cost of Jowar varies from Rs. 1800/quintal to Rs.3000/quintal. Several legislators of NK region have been demanding the government to increase MSP which would encourage the farmers to sell Jowar at procurement centres", Mr. Gundurao said.

Admitting that there was an urgent need to encourage farmers to cultivate Jowar which was more proteinrich compared to rice, he said that Ministry of Agriculture should come up with news schemes for the purpose.

"The rice which is not the staple diet of the people here, has dominated over the traditional food habits. The government wants to provide their stable diet, but for that, we need adequate quantity of food grains", he said.

On the one hand, the Minister was disappointed that his government was unable to supply Jowar to NK region, he felt satisfied for able to provide Ragi to some extent to the people of South India, which is their staple diet.

He said that last year, the government could procure 4.5 lakh quintal of Ragi, and this year the government expect to procure some 6 lakh quintals for supplying under PDS.

Increase in MSP

Stating that he too felt the need for increase in the MSP after meeting the farmers in North Karnataka region, Mr. Gundurao announced that the MSP would surely be increased in a few days.

Though he did specify the exact quantum of hike, however he assured the increase based on the need. He said that Rs. 2,000/quital offered by the government has at least helped in price stability. "At least, no trader would buy Jowar for less than Rs. 2,000, which is good for the farmers", he said.
