A judge in a key Gujarat riot case today walked down the alleys where the pogrom occurred a decade back, video-graphing the spots and talking to some of the 95 victims’ families.

Jyotsna Yagnik’s visit to Ahmedabad’s Naroda Patia, where one of the worst episodes of violence unfolded during the 2002 riots, came at the request of defence lawyers.

Mobs allegedly instigated by Mayaben Kodnani, a former minister in the Narendra Modi government, and local Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi had targeted Muslims. Both are out on bail.

Yagnik walked every lane in the areas mentioned in the case papers to understand the location and crime sequence mentioned by the Supreme Court-appointed special investigating agency (SIT). The trial is in the final stage and the verdict is expected in a few months.

The judge arrived at Naroda Patia around 11.30am and spent the entire day in the area, even taking a look at a well where many bodies were allegedly disposed of.

The judge was shown the routes the people took on February 28, 2002, to escape the mob that had attacked the locality after the Godhra train carnage.

The visit came on a day suspended IPS officer Sanjv Bhatt wrote to the SIT claiming the sleuths had not made any efforts to probe allegations that the Naroda victims’ bodies were dumped in the well in despite specific documents supplied by him.

Yagnik was accompanied by SIT officer V.V. Chaudhary, two special public prosecutors, two lawyers for the victims’ relatives and a battery of defence advocates.

The visit was made under Section 310 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which empowers judges to visit the scene of crime as part of the trial. Judges in other riot cases have also made such trips.

Sixty-seven persons, including ex-minister Kodnani, are facing trial in the case.
