Experts say people can keep diseases away if they consume millets

Guntur (Andhra Pradesh): The two-day Millet Festival - 2014, aimed at popularising consuming low fat and high fibre millet began at Gunta Grounds here on Saturday. The festival is being held for the first time in districts outside Hyderabad in a bid to promote consumption of millet.

Minister for Agriculture Kanna Lakshminarayana, Commissioner of Agriculture K. Madhusudhan Rao and College of Home Science, Hyderabad, Dean Anurag Chaturvedi inaugurated the exhibition here on Saturday. The programme is being jointly organised by the College of Home Science, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) and the Directorate of Agriculture.

Farmers of Department of Agriculture, Directorate of Sorghum Research, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), College of Food Science and Technology, Self-Help Group women, managements of various millets and food processing units, agri machines and other companies set up stalls for sale of their products.

The use of millets and the area of production had been increased for the last few days as the grains are highly nutritional. Millet festival will help in encouraging farmers raising these grains and the processing units, and people should include millets in their daily diet, Mr Lakshminarayana said.

Joint Director (Agriculture) E. Sridhar, programme convenor and Associate Dean of College of Home Sciences, Jagarlamudi Lakshmi were also present.

Ms. Chaturvedi said that people can keep diseases like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular problems away if they consume millets. The scheme -- ‘Initiative for Nutritional Security through Intensive Millet Promotion (INSIMP) -launched by the Union Government recently, to promote millets has increased its production benefiting the growers and promoters, she said. Ms. Lakshmi said that farmers are raising jowar, bajra, ragi, Korra, sama, arika and other millets as main crops or as intercrops.
