The state government on Tuesday sent teachers to win over parents to stop their children from joining the anti-Posco agitation even as security forces reoccupied schools in the proposed project area after returning from Rath Yatra duty.

The official move to segregate children from the agitators began a day after three members of the National Commission for Protection of Child Right (NCPCR) visited the place and interacted with children to find out the reason behind their protest against the project for over a month in the form of a human chain. Chief secretary Bijay Patnaik promised here on Tuesday that police forces would soon be withdrawn from schools. "Though police presence in schools has not affected teaching, alternative arrangements, however, are being worked out to move out the forces," the chief secretary said.

His statement came after the NCPCR team met him. The commission members reportedly advised the administration to refrain from using the schools in the proposed plant area as transit homes for the police. "During our visit to the state we received a number of petitions. We also discussed the matter with the administration and others. The report will be submitted to the commission soon," said Jogesh Dube, a member.

Jagatsinghpur collector Narayan Chandra Jena when contacted admitted that the police were kept in schools as a temporarily measure and that they did not hamper studies. He, however, said they would be shifted soon. He said teachers had been sent to convince parents to withdraw their children from the agitation and send them to school. Sources said since anti-Posco villagers had blocked the entry of civil and police officials in their area, the administration thought it prudent to engage teachers for convincing the parents.

But the Posco Pratirodha Sangram Samiti (PPSS) ruled out any possibility of children giving up the agitation. "We made our stand clear to NCPCR members that children would return to school only after the police were withdrawn from the area and the government stopped land acquisition," said PPSS spokesman Prasant Paikray. "We have no intention of engaging children in the agitation

The government move to acquire land by using police force left little option for the children but to join the agitation because they felt their future was at stake," said Paikray.

After a few days' break, the government on Tuesday resumed work in the Polang area. "Work has started in full swing. We are also getting complete cooperation from the UAC," said Jagatsinghpur collector Jena.
