‘Kerala should promote Organic cultivation’

Union minister of state for Agriculture, K V Thomas, today said Kerala, which had not fully utilised the allocation of Rs 700 crore under the Vidharba package, should utilise the remaning nearly rs 400 crore for Organic cultivation.

About rs 400 crore was yet to be utilised and this could be made use for propagating organic cultivation in the the state, thomas said at the sidelines of a function here.

The miniser said Kasaragod, where use of Endosulfan had caused severe health hazard to many villages, should be made the first organic district in the state.

With demand for organically grown food increasing in domestic and international markets, there is need to tap this opportunity to reap benefits for the farming community, thomas said inaugurating a three day India—International Food and Agri Expo here.

Organic cultivation in India has made reasonably good progress during the last few years. As against 42,000 hectares under certified organic farming during 2003—04, organic agriculture under ceritification has grown to 10.5 lakh hectares in 2009—10. Of these, nearly 7.5 lakh hectares is fully certified while the remaining 3 lakh hectares is under various stages of conversion, Thomas said after inaugurating the three day India International Food and Agri Expo here.

Organic farming is also an ideal option for rain fed marginal land areas and hill areas.

Besides the Central government, various states have also started their own organic farmign promotion programmes. Nine states, including Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, have alerady drafted policies for organic farmign promotions and four states — Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim and Uttarakhand have decided to go 100 per cent organic in due course of time.

The three day exhibition and workshop will focus on technical upgradation in agricultural production, post harvest handling and processings, quality assurance and market linkages.

A B2B meet will also be organised during the expo providing a common platform for interaction between representatives of indsutries, organisaions, business houses, with farmers and repersentatives of agricultural farms and platnations.

The Foundation for Organic Agriculture and Rural Development and Dirctorate of Arecanut and Spices Development and Union Agricultural ministry are jointly organising the event.
