Former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan’s younger brother K.G. Bhaskaran, who had gone on medical leave following allegations of amassing wealth, today resigned as special government pleader in Kerala High Court.

In his resignation letter, sent to advocate-general C.P. Sudhakara Prasad, Bhaskaran said he was resigning on health grounds. Prasad had earlier asked him to go on leave or quit.

This is the second resignation following the media exposures on wealth amassment by relatives of Balakrishnan, who is now chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.

Balakrishnan’s son-in-law P.V. Sreenijan resigned his primary membership of the Youth Congress two days ago after the state government ordered a vigilance probe into complaints that his wealth was disproportionate to his declared income. Sreenijan had lost the 2006 Assembly election as Congress candidate from Narakkal in Ernakulam.

Bhaskaran said he was being treated by doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for respiratory problems and would be leaving for Delhi for further treatment, a PTI report said.

“I was finding it difficult to go to court, though I was attending office,” he was quoted as saying.

Asked if he had consulted Balakrishnan before putting in his papers, Bhaskaran said he hadn’t. However, he said the former judge had two months ago advised him to resign because of his poor health.

Bhaskaran, appointed government pleader by the Congress-led United Democratic Front, had retained his post when the Left Democratic Front came to power in 2006. He used to handle cases relating to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. His wife M.V. Ratnamma retired as a judicial magistrate six years ago.

Bhaskaran and other relatives of Balakrishnan are accused of buying parcels of land totalling 60 acres off the Theni-Dindigul highway at grossly under-valued prices. Reports say the five title deeds show a total of Rs 22 lakh but the market value is estimated to be many times higher.

Land registration records show that Bhaskaran had bought another 30 cents (one cent is one-hundredth of an acre) at Puthenkurishu in Ernakulam for Rs 21 lakh. But local people estimate the property’s value at Rs 50 lakh. A palatial building is coming up on the property at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore.

In a further blow to the Balakrishnan family, a complaint has been filed at the vigilance court in Thrissur seeking a probe into the complaints of ill-gotten wealth.

Former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer has demanded a judicial probe into the allegations.

The Calicut Bar Association today passed a resolution demanding an appropriate inquiry and appealed to Balakrishnan to step down as NHRC chairman, PTI said.

“In case he does not voluntarily quit the office, the President of India should be requested to remove him from the post,” the bar association said.
