AURANGABAD: The khadi and paithani department of the Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) trust is planning to spread its wings in rural areas of the state by employing women to operate handlooms in Akola district and its neighbouring four villages.

The objective behind this initiative is to promote and popularize khadi among youth. Through this mission, the department has come up with the idea of producing khadi jeans to cater to the changing fashion trends, said director of the department Shubha Mahajan.

The department helps the fashion designing students preserve the Indian culture and tradition by blending the traditional cloth in modern way.

The solar charkha, incepted in 2010, operates on solar power. The initiative has been successful in providing employment to women from rural parts of the region. "The 25 solar charkhas are operated by around 10 women staff members. The charkha ensures uniform quality of thread which was difficult to obtain from the traditional charkha," Mahajan said.

All the workers have been trained for free and have been employed in the department itself.

The spool derived from the charkhas is supplied to around 30 women who have been trained to operate handlooms. They, in turn, deliver the finished product and get paid in return. This way, the women become self-employed without having to disturb their routine chores, she added.

The employed women are paid under the rules of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) which depend on the quality of spinning, roving and the spool obtained from the charkha. The women who stay in the city are also paid extra by the MGM to meet the expenses of the urban lifestyle.

Mahajan said the department also planned to have tie ups with farmers to produce flowers and traditional seeds for dyeing purposes. "Pomegranate peels have also been bought and used to produce clothes by the department, providing eco-friendly solutions," she added.
