Most children working in dhabas and tea stalls in the capital harbour dreams of going to school, but their poverty-ravaged families and employers discourage them, says an ongoing study being conducted by legal students of Kalinga Institute of Technology (KIT), Bhubaneswar.

The KIT team comprising Vaishali Singh, Neha Tripathi and Shika is in the city for a month to study the status of deprived urban children working in dhabas, hotels and garages.

The topic for the survey is Child Right— nutrition, health and education. The students have interviewed child labourers working in Hatia railway station, Overbridge, Ranchi railway station, Lalpur Chowk and Main Road in Ranchi so far.

One of the members of KIT team, Vaishali Singh, said: “We found that many children are willing to attend school but are unable to do so because they are forced by their parents to work and their employers don’t allow them to study. In many cases, we saw that if children fail to return home with money, their parents beat them up.”

The team also found out the condition of deprived urban children was pitiable. “We were shocked to see these small children using adhesives to kill their hunger pangs and beat stress. Many of them are addicted to these sedatives,” said Neha Tripathy, another member of the study team.

Ganesh Reddy, the state representative of National Commission For Child Right Protection, said once the students finish their internship they would prepare a report based on their findings.

The report would be submitted to the state human resource development department. “While the state should ensure that every child is benefited under the Right to Education Act, the number of dropouts is increasing fast. This paints a grim picture of the state. We will draw the state’s attention towards the pitiable condition of urban children, ” said Reddy.
