The District Administration in Koraput seems to have geared up towards performing remarkably in NREGA in the coming days. Involving credible NGOs, the district is going for social audit of NREGA in the district.

Social Audit is an important means of wider transparency in NREGA and the result of the process could provide important directions for better performance in future, Rupa Roshan Sahoo, the project director of DRDA , Koraput said while addressing the NGOs from all across the district in a meeting held at DNK conference hall at Koraput. Viewing NREGA as both demand driven as well as target driven scheme, she believed that GO-NGO collaboration would be very instrumental in meeting the imperatives. The collaboration, not limiting to the social audit only, would go a long way in meeting the contemplation of the district under the purview of the spirit of the Act, she maintained.

The district administration had also laid enormous importance on the real priorities under NREGA such as farm ponds, water harvesting structures, agro-forestry, private land development and soil conservation suitably blending the State priority with local need for visible impacts. Each village was to be given a project prioritised under the Annual Action Plan seems an appropriate step towards managing predictability and confidence of workers, she added.

While recalling the vision statement of the district Collector of Koraput, declared a few months back, Mihir Kumar Jena, senior leader of Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), Koraput said that the main areas to be improved in NREGA were timely payment, worksite facilities, wider availability of formats and job applications, accountability of each functionary at every level, effective grievance monitoring, 24 hours helpline, awareness generation and Panchayat revamping. The collaboration between district administration and local NGOs can lead towards addressing the persistent issues and challenges in NREGA, he added.
