Kudankulam and the surrounding areas remained tense on an incident-free Tuesday, after Monday’s violent happenings. Villages in a radius of 25 km, including Anjugramam, Chettikulam, Sree Renganarayanapuram, Levenchipuram, Viswanathapuram, Kudankulam and Idinthakarai, wore a deserted look after the suspension of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus services. People confined themselves to their homes as the tense situation continued to prevail in and around Kudankulam.

According to official sources, the TNSTC (Tirunelveli Division) operated more than 15 buses every day on these routes. But all the services were suspended as the police did not give clearance following the tension at Kudankulam, Idinthakarai and surrounding areas. All shops and business establishments remained closed for the second day from Anjugramam to Kudankulam. One could see private vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, parked on both sides of the road on this route. The police dispersed a crowd which gathered at Vairavikinaru around noon. As many as 27 police personnel, including 20 women, who sustained injuries in the incidents on Monday, were admitted to the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital at Asaripallam for treatment. In Kanyakumari district, fishermen stayed away from sea on the east coast in support of the agitation against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. Buses to Uvari, Tiruchendur and Tuticorin were operated up to Anjugramam and later diverted to Valliyur to reach their destinations.

Tension continued to prevail in certain villages on the east coast and fishermen from Kanyakumari, Chinna Muttom, Vavuthurai, Kovalam, Keeza Manakudi, Mela Manakudi, Kesavanputhanthurai and Rajakkamangalamthurai observed fast at two places. Bus services to coastal areas were diverted through other routes and a few shops remained closed for the second day in Kanyakumari. Fishermen in Kanyakumari, Kovalam, Vavuthurai, Chinna Muttom and Arockiyapuram hoisted black flags in front of their houses and in their fishing boats.

53 arrested

Police have so far arrested 53 persons in connection with the violence that erupted after the police chased away the anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project protestors from their beachside protest venue. The police, who arrested 35 persons for having orchestrated “organised violence” to show their protest on Monday, nabbed 18 more on Tuesday. All of them were remanded in judicial custody later.
