Calcutta: Trinamul MP Kunal Ghosh was arrested this evening on the charge of non-payment of salary and other statutory dues to a section of employees of the media outfit of the busted Saradha Group.

Ghosh is a Rajya Sabha MP but has been suspended from the Trinamul Congress.

"He (Kunal) was the group CEO of the media operation. We have documentary evidence that suggests his involvement with Sudipto Sen (the arrested chief of Saradha) for all the happenings," said Arnab Ghosh, detective chief, Bidhannagar Commissionerate.

Asked to elaborate on "all the happenings", Ghosh said the probe was still on.

"Among other charges, he has been arrested under non-bailable Sections 420 (cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 406 (criminal breach of trust)," Ghosh said. If proved guilty, Kunal could be jailed for up to seven years.

Asked whether a sitting MP could be arrested, the officer said the formalities would be "looked into".

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said the arrest of an MP in a criminal case did not require sanction from the Chair. "It appears that the chairman of the Rajya Sabha would be informed within 24 hours," Chatterjee said.

Kunal, who became the face of the Saradha media wing, became a Rajya Sabha member in April 2012 but angered the party by demurring when Mamata Banerjee decided to pull out of UPA II.

Sidelined after the repayment default by Saradha and its collapse, Kunal had become a rebel in the party. He was suspended after an outburst in September against the party leadership at a blood donation camp where he called for a CBI probe into the scam.

Trinamul MP Derek O'Brien said on the arrest: "The law will take its own course." Trinamul all-India general secretary Mukul Roy echoed him.

Although Kunal was arrested in a specific case filed by an employee of the media outfit, Broadcast Worldwide, in April 2013, detective chief Ghosh said there was "always the possibility of a supplementary chargesheet".

"We found his involvement in siphoning off funds that the (Saradha) group had raised from depositors.... He was part of the conspiracy," the officer added.

Over 17 lakh people are said to have lost money when Saradha defaulted on repayments.

Today, Kunal broke down several times during interrogation and claimed that the Trinamul leadership would be better placed to help police in the Saradha probe.
