All chief ministers will be requested to give their suggestions on a proposed land acquisition law in the next one month before the draft goes to the cabinet.

Rural development minister Jairam Ramesh today said that his ministry had prepared the draft of the Land Acquisitions (Amendment) Bill which will be sent to chief ministers next week. “We cannot do anything without consulting the states. Land is a state subject and land acquisition is on the concurrent list. I will write to all chief ministers with the draft bill for their suggestions. I will try to meet as many chief ministers possible on this issue,” he said.

Ramesh said the consultations would continue for the next one month during which he would also seek views from all political parties, stakeholders and the public on the proposed law that will prescribe the process of land acquisition for a public purpose and comprehensive resettlement and rehabilitation procedures.

The ministry has prepared a draft bill keeping in view the suggestions from the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council, the Planning Commission and political parties, among them the Trinamul Congress.

Ramesh said the consultations were aimed at giving one more chance to everybody to discuss and give their suggestions. He added that the bill would be referred to a parliamentary standing committee but there may not be much change at that level. “Once it goes to the standing committee, it will be a different kind of consultation. No major change can be brought to the bill,” he said.

Ramesh said he has already spoken to Debabrata Bandopadhyay of Trinamul and Sharad Yadav of the Janata Dal (United).
