Even as the State government readies for land acquisition for the Posco steel project, the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), which is spearheading a movement against the project, has announced that it would oppose the process.

To add to the woes, the United Action Committee (UAC), a pro-Posco outfit, has threatened not to cooperate with the Jagatsinghpur district administration for the land acquisition.

PPSS president Abhay Sahu told this paper that the organisation would oppose land acquisition as it is not in favour of the steel plant at the original site.

He said the government and Posco officials will not be allowed into the proposed project site.

Meanwhile, the Left and other like-minded parties have announced a dharna in front of the Raj Bhavan on Monday opposing land acquisition for the project from May 18.

In a statement, CPI State secretary Dibakar Nayak said it was undemocratic to go for the land acquisition when the government is yet to renew the MoU with the South Korean company.

During the visit of Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh to Orissa on April 30, the representatives of CPI, CPM, Forward Bloc, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Samajwadi Party had submitted a memorandum to him alleging that the State Government had submitted a report to him favouring Posco, Nayak said. Besides, a map of the area showing existence of betel vines was also submitted to him.

However, the Centre accorded final Forest clearance to the project in violation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA), he charged.

Former minister Damodar Rout had also said there should not be land acquisition without renewal of the MoU with Posco.

He had, however, announced his support for the project at the original site. Jagatsinghpur Collector Narayan Jena had met Rout here on Saturday seeking his cooperation for land acquisition for the project.

The UAC has demanded proper rehabilitation and resettlement of around 60 families who were shifted to a Posco camp at Badagabapur in June, 2007, as they were driven out of their homes by the anti-Posco forces.

Minister for Steel and Mines Raghunath Mohanty, however, said the land acquisition would be started as scheduled in a peaceful manner. He said MoU with Posco would be renewed very soon.
