The largest study to investigate the causes of common cancers in India has started through a collaboration between the University of Oxford and 12 leading Indian cancer centres.

The study will investigate whether certain factors common in Indian lifestyle, such as a life-long vegetarian diet, are important in influencing the risk of cancer, the university said today.

Cancer incidence in India is expected to increase by over two-thirds in the next two decades to approximately 1.7 million new cases each year.

The Indox Cancer Research Network, a partnership between Oxford and the cancer centres, will conduct a study on 30,000 people in 12 centres across the country.

Raghib Ali, the director of the network, said: “This is the biggest study to date of risk factors associated with cancers in India. Cancer is increasing in India. Although it is increasing from a low level — because of India’s size — if it reaches levels seen in the West, many millions of people will be affected.”

The study will investigate lifestyle, diet and genetic factors associated with the most common cancers — breast, bowel, lung, stomach, gall bladder, oesophagus, cervix and neck. Two of the studies — in breast and bowel cancer — have already begun and are expected to be complete in two years.
