The State government, faced with severe shortage of doctors in rural areas, is likely to promulgate an ordinance to make one year of rural service mandatory for undergraduate and post-graduate medical students.

Making an announcement to this effect in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said despite fixing a minimum salary of Rs 70,000, doctors were not coming forward to work in rural areas. As announced in the budget, rural service will be made compulsory through a legislation. If the legislation is delayed, then an Ordinance will be promulgated, he said.

He was responding to Congress member Dr Sharanprakash Patil’s demand that doctors should be immediately posted to Mudhol community health centre in Sedam taluk of Gulbarga. He said for the past four years he had been demanding the same but for no avail. As many as 40 villages have been adversely affected due to lack of doctors, he said.

Gowda said three specialists, two senior health officers and one dentist had been appointed  to the 30-bed hospital in Mudhol. Explaining the severe constraints faced by the government in appointing doctors to villages, Gowda said the KPSC had advertised for recruitment of 600 doctors.

However, only 252 applications were received. When placement was given for all the applicants, only 137 candidates chose the place where they wanted to work. Of these, only 57 have reported for work. The doctors who were offered jobs on February 29, were yet to report for the duty, he added. Patil said that his party would support a bill making rural service compulsory.
