Left cries foul over House price ‘pact’

Smaller parties today accused the government and the Opposition BJP of striking a face-saver deal on price rise, overshadowing the debate on the crucial issue in the Lok Sabha.

Led by the Left, parties like the BSP and the RJD lashed out at the alleged pact the government was said to have struck with the BJP for drafting the language of the motion in such a way that the Centre could support it too.

The resolution on the motion said the “burden of price rise” on the common man was “continuing”.

“Expressing deep concern over price rise, this House calls upon the government to take immediate effective steps to check inflation that will give relief to the common man,” it said, with no mention of censuring the government for failing to contain price rise.

“I compliment the government for its success to strike conciliation with the Opposition. The government talked only to the principal Opposition and it agreed to discuss price rise and not blame the government,” CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said.

It is “a new trend of bipolarity”, the Left leader added.

The CPM and the CPI pressed for an amendment to the resolution and said it should blame the government for its “colossal failure” to contain price rise that had led to “unbearable suffering” of the masses.

The BJP appeared on the back foot as it struggled to reject the charge of bailing out the government by not censuring it. The party was also accused of agreeing informally not to press for a vote by division after the debate.

Reacting to the Left barbs, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha intervened to say: “I am satisfied with the resolution. But it was a mistake on the part of the government not to reach out to you (the Left parties).”

The former Union minister sought to turn the tables on the Left by recalling how the government had behaved when it did not consult the BJP over the Indo-US nuclear deal during UPA-I.

“They did not talk to us on the nuclear deal. They talked only to you (Left) and left you in the lurch,” he said.

RJD MP Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said the Congress and the BJP had “come together” on an issue that concerns the poor. “It is very unfortunate. The poor are being shoved aside,” he said.

The BSP’s Dara Singh Chauhan also joined the issue, though indirectly. He said discussions over price rise had started under Rule 184 that entails voting but wondered what would happen when it comes to an end, hinting at a pact between the Congress and the BJP.

The BJP’s alleged soft attitude towards the government found reflection in Yashwant Sinha’s speech. He refrained from a political attack on the government and focused on economics, blaming the government for adopting wrong policies to contain price rise.

The government will reply to the debate tomorrow.
