27 party supporters killed since election results announced

The Left Front would raise the issue of terror being unleashed upon its cadres and party workers in protests outside the State Assembly and Parliament and may also raise it during the all-party meeting called by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, State Left Front Committee chairman Biman Bose said here on Thursday.

Claiming that 27 supporters and party workers had been killed since the results of the Assembly elections were announced on May 13, Mr. Bose said that a reign of terror had been unleashed upon supporters of the Left parties across the State.

A sit-in demonstration will be observed outside the premises of the State Assembly on August 12. Present and former elected representatives from the Left parties as well as leaders of the mass organisations will be present at the demonstration, said Mr. Bose, who is also the State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

He said that a similar demonstration would be organised outside Parliament on August 25.

Confirming that the Left parties would be attending the all-party meeting on August 3, Mr. Bose said only the proposals to change the name of the State and Purbo Medinipur district had been included in the agenda for the meeting.

“We are in favour of all-party meetings. When we were in power, efforts had been made to organise similar meetings,” Mr. Bose said, in a veiled reference to the Trinamool Congress's publicly stated stand of not attending any meetings or public functions in which leaders of the CPI(M) were present.

Saying that all-party meetings should be called to discuss all major issues, Mr. Bose said the Left Front had wanted that the tripartite agreement that paved the way for the setting up of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) should have been discussed as well as the situation in the Maoist-affected Jangal Mahal region in the State.

Mr. Bose said that the Left may raise the two issues as well as the law and order situation in the State and the attacks on its supporters.
