The Left parties have refused to answer government questionnaires on the Lok Pal bill, a stance that arrays them alongside the BJP in trying to corner the Congress-led UPA over corruption.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat has written to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee saying his party cannot give its views on the six questionnaires, to be answered in yes-or-no terms.

The format even prompted CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan to slam the government for its casual attitude in seeking answers like an “objective test”.

Under pressure from Anna Hazare and his civil society representatives drafting the Lok Pal bill, the government had sought the opinions of political parties and chief ministers over the inclusion of the Prime Minister and the higher judiciary within the ambit of the bill.

Karat asked the government to prepare a draft legislation first and then invite feedback.

“We suggest that the government prepare a draft of the Lok Pal legislation on which we will be able to give our views. You can seek our views before it is presented to Parliament. If that is not possible, we shall certainly express our views on the draft through parliamentary procedures,” the CPM boss said in the letter.

The BJP has also refused to answer the questions and stressed “Parliament’s sovereignty” in enacting laws.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, whose Janata Dal (United) is a BJP ally, has alleged the questionnaires had reduced the Lok Pal issue to a “market survey”.
