The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) activists staged a protest here on Wednesday to vent their dissent at the Central Government over the poor implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

Scores of persons took part in the demonstration, which was led by LJP President Ram Vilas Paswan and the head of the party’s Punjab state unit Jay Singh.

Jay Singh said that they have sought from the Central Government an assurance about better implementation of the scheme in the state so as to enable more and more people to gain from the MGNREGA.

“There is a very poor implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in Punjab. The Sarpanchas (Village headmen) do not want to register the names, do not give work or receipts of work, people have not got any payment for more than six months in the past. Muster rolls of any kind are not maintained there,” Singh told reporters.

“So, we have come here with these things and want to say that if a rule has been made for poor, then it should also be functional. And today the biggest disappointment we have is that disabled people are not included. We want all the disabled should get the benefit of this,” he added.

Further pulling up the Centre, Paswan said that the state governments are misusing the funds.

He said that their party has demanded the government to give an account on the job guarantee scheme and they should give at par, the remunerations in the state sharing borders.

“Our party has demanded that the government should tell that in the job guarantee of 100 days given by government how much remuneration one family should get as per 100 days and whether they are getting it or not and should give guarantee of the employment,” said Paswan.

“Government should also give same amount of remuneration to the states of Haryana and Punjab since they share same border,” he added.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing hundred days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. (ANI)
