Ever wondered what information the vast internet contains about alphonsoes? Not enough juice: just a list of exporters and a scant wiki-page. To fill this gap came agropedia.

A content farm, a search engine and an online meeting ground for farmers and agri cultural students, the agropedia is for all those who have a haphazard and fuzzy idea about food. It is also for those who want to make the internet richer on Indian agriculture. From how much organic farming takes place in India to how many homes do mangoes reach, agropedia answers all the queries.

A computer science faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur, T V Prabhakar, developed this semantic read-write website. "It's a combination of Facebook, Google, Wikipedia and a library for the agricultural community. Part of the website caters to farmers and agricultural students, but a large part of the agropedia is for tomorrow," Prabhakar said.

Funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the website receives contributions from the farming community every minute. In the coming years, India will have to feed several mouths and the ballooning food bills indicate how crucial agriculture planning will become, said experts.

At present, there are 4,000 users on the agropedia, discussing and solving similar problems on the site. Close to 30,000 documents on best practices in agriculture are available on the website.

"The image of Indian farmers has changed drastically. They are more connected and prefer modernized farming techniques," added Prabhakar.

From the inputs gathered by the agropedia, the best practice methods are messaged to farmers regularly.

Though the agropedia has been designed keeping in mind the Indian farming community, contributions to the website have poured in from across the globe.

It's a combination of Facebook, Google, Wikipedia and a library for the agricultural community.
