New Delhi: National Lok Adalat camps today settled "out of court" nearly three crore cases across the country involving a financial liability of Rs 383 crore.

Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar inaugurated the programme in Delhi, organised by the National Legal Services Authority (Nalsa). It was also attended by Justice Dipak Misra, the Supreme Court's second senior most judge.

The programme, held mostly once a year, is aimed at reducing the backlog in regular courts by holding these camps where cases such as legal disputes relating to insurance claims, accidents involving vehicles and bank loans are settled by sitting or retired judges through terms mutually acceptable to the litigants.

"Approximately 2,97,246 cases as per the figures received till 4.30pm (on Saturday), which include 1,56,701 pending and 1,40,545 pre-litigation cases, have been settled. The total value of the settlement amount reached today is Rs 383 crore," a Nalsa release said, adding the aim was to reduce litigation where settlements are possible.
