‘Lokpal cannot be above Parliament'

A strong Lokpal Bill is necessary to fight corruption, but it cannot become a “supreme body” above Parliament with control over the legislature, executive and judiciary, Sudhakar Reddy, deputy general secretary of the national council of the Communist Party of India (CPI), has said.

Speaking at the launch of the anti-corruption campaign by the Left parties here on Saturday, Mr. Sudhakar Reddy said that participation of civil society organisations could not become an alternative to Parliament.

“While a strong Bill is necessary, what we lack is the political will to fight corruption,” said Mr. Sudhakar Reddy, citing the example of the Government's inaction on the issue of black money in foreign banks.

He claimed that the Government's inaction raised suspicions against top Congress leaders.

Corruption, he said, was not just about money exchanging hands, but should be seen as a result of a larger policy matter that took into account misuse of Government machinery, allocation of land to corporate interests, and looting of mineral resources.

‘Important role'

Mr. Sudhakar Reddy said the Left had to play an important role in fighting corruption through a sustained campaign. CPI State council secretary Siddanagouda Patil said the absence of the Left in the fight against corruption was leading to common people joining the likes of Baba Ramdev's campaign.

The former CPI (Marxist) MLA Srirama Reddy, said that only the Left parties had the moral right to fight corruption in a context where the most corrupt were entrenched in all other political parties.

Kageri criticised

Mr. Srirama Reddy said the recent remarks of Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri that those opposing the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita in schools should leave the country, reflected his complete disregard for the democratic and constitutional set-up.

Mr. Srirama Reddy said that many people, from Buddha to B.R. Ambedkar, had been highly critical of the world view as enshrined in the Gita.

The anti-corruption campaign by the Left parties — CPI, CPI(M) and the Forward Bloc — will go on till July 22.
