New Delhi: A committee headed by the Prime Minister will meet on March 1 to process the names to be considered for the country's first Lokpal, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Friday.

The committee will include the Chief Justice of India, the Lok Sabha Speaker and the leader of the single largest Opposition party in the Lower House, attorney-general K.K. Venugopal told a bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R. Banumathi.

The bench, while recording the submission, asked the secretary, department of personnel and training (DoPT), to file an affidavit on the steps taken and proposed to be taken on the issue. It posted the matter for further hearing to March 6.

"The learned attorney-general for India has submitted that steps under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, is under way and a meeting has been scheduled on March 1, 2018. The steps taken and proposed may be indicated in an affidavit of the secretary (DoPT)... to be filed on March 5 when the Court reopens after the Holi holidays. List the matter on March 6," the bench said in a written order.

The bench passed the order while dealing with a contempt application moved by an NGO, Common Cause, against DoPT secretary Ajay Mittal for delay in the appointment of the country's first anti-corruption ombudsman despite an apex court directive in April last year to expedite the process.

Notified on January 16, 2014, the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act has been hanging fire as the Modi government refused to constitute it on the ground that there was no leader of Opposition in the present Lok Sabha and several amendments had been proposed to the act which are under Parliament's consideration.

The Centre's alleged intransigence has been challenged in the top court by two NGOs - the other one is Youth For Equality - seeking a directive to the government to put the Lokpal in place.

Subsequently, the Centre amended the rules to include the leader of the single largest Opposition party if there is no leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The Centre had amended the rules upon prodding by the court. "If, at present, the LOP is not available, surely, the chairperson and the other two members of the selection committee, namely, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India or his nominee may proceed to appoint an eminent jurist as a member of the selection committee under Section 4(1)(e) of the Act.
