Madhya Pradesh has highest number of elder abuse cases: Survey-Murari Shetye

PANAJI: At least 31% of elders in India are abused by their relatives; the highest number of elder abused is traced in Madhya Pradesh with 77.12% while Rajasthan is the lowest at 1.67%. 40% elders are abuse because they are economically dependent. 

Assam is followed by 60.55%, on third position is Uttar Pradesh with 52%, forth is Gujarat by 42.97%, and Andhra Pradesh is 42.86%. The lowest percentage of elder abuse is recorded in Goa, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. The survey was conducted by the HelpAge India. 

The finding of survey revealed that 34% of elders are facing disrespect, 27% elders are beaten or slap by their children where as 39% are verbally abused in the family. 

The survey also revealed that 35% of elders are been abused between 0-1 year, 26% are been abused for last 2-3 years and 30% are been abused for over 4 years. 

"26% of elders are been abused every day similar 26% are abused every week, 31% are been abused once in a month and 17% faced abused once in a few months," according to the survey. 

Survey also revealed that only 4% of elder are given care by their relatives. "Primary perpetrators of abuse are 39% are son, 35% are daughter-in-law and 22% are relatives," said the survey. 

Survey report also pointed out that only 74% case of elder abuse is not report to any agencies. "24% elder don't report because they don't have confidence in the ability of the person/agency to solve their problem while 76% elders does not report because they don't want to disclose their family mater," said the survey.
