MUMBAI: Pushing for the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act in the state, the government has appointed a committee to look into various issues concerning schools.

The committee, to be headed by chairperson of the Maharashtra Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Sarjerao Jadhav, has been asked to consider issues related to permission to be granted for new schools, permissions for increase in the number of classrooms, shifting of schools from one location to another, and migration of students.

The decision for the committee's appointment was taken by the school education department earlier this month. According to a notification issued by the department, the committee will comprise six other members.

Senior officials said that with the RTE Act advocating right to free and compulsory education for children in the six to 14 age group, the existing network of schools in the state would require certain adjustments.

With norms for the student to teacher ratio also laid down, officials said that enforcing these might just mean that new schools and classrooms would have to be opened. Students in some schools/classrooms might also be required to be accommodated elsewhere.

The committee is expected to consider all these aspects.
