The Maharashtra government is looking out for an independent agency to evaluate the implementation of the Prime Minister’s relief package for six suicide-prone districts of Vidarbha. The government move comes after it approached the Centre for a second PM’s relief package of Rs 7,200 crore, wherein the state has been asked to get the implementation of the Rs 3,750-crore first package reviewed by a third party.

The Prime Minister had announced the first package in June 2006, to be implemented over three years in the six districts — Akola, Amravati, Washim, Wardha, Buldhana and Yevatmal. It included waiver of interest on farmers’ loans and rescheduling of debts, besides creating supplementary income sources in villages for distressed families.

Sources said Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had raised the demand for a second PM’s package during his discussions with the Planning Commission vice-chairman on the state annual plan for 2010-’11 on April 29. “They picked some holes in the implementation of the package and we tried to convince them on the issue,” a senior bureaucrat said. “They seemed convinced, but have asked for a third-party review. It will be done accordingly.”
