Opposing the West Bengal government's proposal to do away with the right to strike of its employees, major Central trade unions have decided to support the government employees' unions in their agitation for protection of their rights.

Describing the comments of State Labour Minister Purnendu Basu as unfortunate, Gurudas Dasgupta, general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and MP of the Communist party of India (CPI), said the right to strike and the right to form a union was enshrined in the Constitution and upheld in the conventions of the International labour Organisation (ILO).

“I hope that the Chief Minister will choose not to follow his [Labour Minister's] advice. If the right to strike is really taken away from government employees, all the Central trade unions will back the State government employees unions,” Mr. Dasgupta told The Hindu over telephone from Kerala.

Questioning the timing of the statements when Central trade unions had decided to organise a general strike on February 28 against price rise and violation of labour laws, he said the State government's proposed move would encourage domestic and multinational corporates and reinforce the neo-liberal attitude of the Centre.

Kali Ghosh, State secretary of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said the comments of the Labour Minister exposed the “undemocratic character of the State government.”

Referring to previous statements by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that she was against strikes, Mr. Ghosh said when his union had then taken up the matter with the Labour Minister, it was promised that the rights of workers would not be violated.

“We will extend all our support to government employees, because later the government will try to enforce the decision not to strike on private sector employees,” Mr. Ghosh said.

Stating that the INTUC would support the government employees in any move they may take to protect their rights, its State president Pradip Bhattacharya said the government cannot take away the rights of its employees.
