The Karnataka High Court-appointed committee on malnutrition among children will submit a report to Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen by June 15, committee chairman N. K Patil has said.

The eight-member panel visited Bidar on Monday and held discussions with officials.

“Officials tell us that there are 68,000 malnourished children in the district. However, NGOs tell us the number is not less than 71,000. We have instructed the District health officer to screen all malnourished children to find out if some of them have any debilitating diseases. The DHO has been instructed to submit a report to us,” Mr. Patil said.

The committee told officials to set up a district-level rehabilitation centre for malnourished children.

“We will see if the centre can be set up at the Bidar Institute of Medical sciences after a visit to the government medical college on Tuesday,” he said.

According to him, a district-level committee will monitor the status of malnourished children and their development. A five-member committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner would look into the facilities in anganwadis in the district.
