The Malom neighbourhood, which witnessed the killing of 10 civilians leading to Irom Sharmila’s 11-year fast, rose in union today to lend a voice to the Iron Lady against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.

Mass sit-ins were held in various parts of the state to mark the beginning of the 12th year of Sharmila’s fast, demanding scrapping of the “draconian law”. Police dispersed a group of students who staged a sit-in front of the city’s Kangla fort.

Today is the fourth day of the Festival of Hope, Justice and Peace, during which a series of programmes were organised under the aegis of the Just Peace Foundation, a Sharmila support group. The festival will end tomorrow with a public meeting here.

Malom, near the airport in Imphal West, were unanimous in calling for scrapping of the act. Men and women in traditional Manipuri mourning dresses staged a one-day fast.

“We can never bring back my son. If the act is repealed, the relatives of those killed and people of Malom would be compensated to some extent. We are fully with Sharmila and we will not be in peace until this act is repealed,” Tokpam Samarendra, 70, said.

His son Shantikumar Singh, who studied in Class XI in an Imphal city school, was among the 10 civilians killed at the Malom bus stand on November 2, 2000, by Assam Rifles personnel in retaliation to a militant bomb attack.

Sinam Robinson and his younger brother Chandramani were waiting at the bus stand when they were mowed down by the personnel.

Their aunt L. Sana Devi, 60, was also among those killed.

Following a directive from the Imphal bench of Gauhati High Court, the court of district and sessions judge, Manipur East, carried out an inquiry into the incident and the report was submitted to the high court.

The high court is yet to complete the hearing. Legal sources said the inquiry report clearly held the Assam Rifles personnel responsible for the death of the 10 innocent civilians.

Sharmila, then only 28 years of age, started her marathon hunger strike on November 5, 2000 at the site of the killing.

On the completion of 11 years of fasting, Sharmila yesterday said she was ready to serve more jail terms till the act was repealed.

S. Kamalkumar, a fish farmer, lost two brothers and he was yet to recover from the shock.

One of the two brothers, Robinson, was a child bravery award winner of 1987.

“My brothers died because of this act. To prevent recurrence of such incidents, the act should go,” Kamalkumar said.

To mark the day, a candle-lighting ceremony was held at Sharmila’s home village, Kongpal in Imphal East, and surrounding areas of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, where Sharmila is kept.
