In a bid to further marginalise the Maoists, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has charted out elaborate plans for the tribal people of Jangalmahal.

The State Government has plans to provide more “productive opportunities” to the Advasis in order to bring them into the socio-economic mainstream. These include job creation, developing the Alchiki script, setting up educational institutions and healthcare units and inducting local talent into sports and cultural activities.

“We have plans to bring as many tribal players into sports like football and cricket as they are strong and physically fit. This is one reason we have decided to induct them into the best department of the Government like the police force,” Banerjee said in a function organised by the Department for development of backward communities.

“We want peace to prevail in the tribal areas and we are taking a whole lot of measures,” the Chief Minister said at a time when State Governor MK Narayanan conceded death of Kishenji was not enough in root out Maoist problem and “a lot more has to be done.”

“The Government had increased the procurement price of Kendu leaves from `48 to 75 and was doing the same for lac cultivators,” Banerjee said, adding works were already in progress to build hostels for girls, schools, hospitals, bridges and roads where the local youth will be productively employed” the Chief Minister said.
