Union Minister for Women & Child Development Maneka Gandhi wants to put an end to children consuming empty calories. Instead, she wants them to consume calories rich in nutrition, and her ministry wants to have sachets containing 600-1000 calories of nutrition for children.

The plan, brainchild of Gandhi, suggests that the central government will supply the nutrients list and the state(s) can have them made. The sachet will bear the Government of India’s stamp.

“If we start thinking of nutrition as the goal than food, we can change the nature of the offering. These sachets can contain the amount of calories which are required by children and lactating/pregnant women on daily basis. It is pointless serving them substandard food filled with empty calories. The endeavour is to save children from the menace of malnourishment. This can be done in two years,” said a senior official of the ministry requesting anonymity.

According to the plan, which has been taken up with the Planning Commission, these sachets made of paper will have “macro and micro nutrients” which can be consumed with water. The ministry has also asked Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali to create such sachets which can benefit malnourished children.

Some of the institutes already have solution(s) in place, said the ministry. National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, for instance, has created a mixture and so have governments of Uttarakhand and Telangana.

Gandhi, through this initiative, plans to save “several lakhs of crores” being spent on maintenance and monitoring of anganwadis.

“The food provided is substandard and is usually empty calories of atta/chawal mixed with sugar and a small amount of protein like nuggets or bad coloured dal. Plus, it is unhygienic. No monitoring systems have been developed in 40 years and there has been no reporting. Moreover, each state has different ways of getting the food prepared. Most states have outsourced it to contractors on tenders to make and distribute food,” reads the ministry’s note.
