One person was killed and 30 were injured when alleged casteist remarks ignited clashes between supervisors and workers at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant today.

Work has been suspended at the factory of India’s largest carmaker, which has been sitting on a labour-relations powder keg. “Work at the Manesar plant had to be stopped following the violence,” the company said.

“One person was killed in the clash between supervisors and workers inside the plant complex on Wednesday afternoon. The body is yet to be identified,” Anil Rai, the joint commissioner, Gurgaon, told The Telegraph.

Sources said the person was suspected to have died of burn injuries.

In a statement, the company said the violence broke out in the evening when a worker beat up a supervisor on the shop floor.

However, the employees’ union said “objectionable remarks” by the supervisor against an employee triggered the violence. Some employees said a casteist taunt was behind the clashes.

The factory, which mainly makes the Swift, was the centre of more than one instance of labour unrest last year.

“Workers at the plant today turned violent, attacking and injuring executives and managers in the office premises. At least 40 managers and executives are injured and have been rushed to hospital. The attackers also set fire to property and damaged facilities,” Maruti said.

“The sequence of events began in the morning with a worker beating up a supervisor on the shop floor. The workers’ union prevented the management from taking disciplinary action against the worker,” the company added.

As part of their protest, the workers prevented executives and managers from leaving the factory after working hours. They blocked the gates and held the executives hostage, the company claimed.

Maruti said that when senior managers met union leaders for talks, the workers attacked them.

The union challenged the version. Sarabjeet Singh, the general secretary of the Maruti Suzuki Workers’ Union, said: “The supervisor made casteist remarks against a permanent worker, who belongs to the scheduled caste category. When we opposed it, they misbehaved with us and suspended the worker.”

Late tonight, Singh said the morning-shift workers had not yet left the plant. “Tension is prevailing at the plant. About 1,500 workers from the morning shift have not left the complex. If the management does not take back the worker, we may stop our work,” he said tonight.

The Haryana government has deputed director-general of police Ranjiv Dalal to Gurgaon.
