Maruti Suzuki India shut its main plant at Gurgaon for two days starting today due to component supply constraints from SPIL, where workers are on a stir in support of the striking colleagues at the country's largest car-maker's Manesar plant.

"Maruti Suzuki has decided to suspend production at the Gurgaon plant on October 14 and October 15. This is in view of the non-availability of components for cars," the company said in a statement.

While models like M800, Omni, Eeco and Gypsy are not dependent on the component supply from Suzuki Powertrain India Limited (SPIL), it was considered that operating the plant only for these models will not be viable, it added

"The production loss for these models can be recovered once the production resumes," it said.

Workers at SPIL and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) have gone on a simultaneous strike since October 7 in support of their colleagues at MSI Manesar plant. SPIL supplies engines and transmission to MSI.

The Haryana Labour Department today filed a civil suit in a Gurgaon court alleging that that unions of SPIL and SMIPL and representatives of MSI' Manesar plant workers had violated agreement and action must be taken agains them.

Tensions ran high at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant with about 1,500 police personnel entering the factory and asking the striking workers to vacate the premises as per the Punjab and Haryana High Court order.

The workers, however, said they will not leave the factory unless forcibly evicted.

In the meantime, the union of Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd (SPIL) claimed that 18 workers have been sacked by the company.

Suzuki Powertrain India Employees Union (SPIEU) and the rebel body of MSI's Manesar plant - Maruti Suzuki Employees Union (MSEU), also said that they will challenge the High Court order at the Supreme Court.

"There are about 1,500 police personnel inside the plant. They have asked us to leave the factory otherwise action will be taken against us," a worker inside Maruti's Manesar plant said.

He said the workers have decided to defy the court order and will sit inside the plant unless forcefully evicted, adding food supplies to the workers have been stopped since 7 am this morning.

Similarly, workers at SPIL, which supplies engines and transmissions to MSI, said they are also not vacating the factory premises. The company has sacked 18 workers.

"The management has not informed us individually but has pasted an order on the notice board saying 18 of us are terminated," SPIEU President Sube Singh Yadav said.

The strike will not end now, unless these workers are reinstated, Yadav said.

SPIL officials could not be reached for comments. Yadav said the workers are preparing to move the Supreme Court against the High Court order.

Yesterday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court passed an order that there would be no sit-in strike within 100 meters of the premises of Maruti Suzuki's factory at Manesar.

"We are talking to lawyers and we are going challenge the high court order in the Supreme Court," Yadav said.

MSEU President Sonu Gujjar said the worker's body at MSI's Manesar plant would also challenge the High Court order.

Workers at MSI's Manesar plant, SPIL and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd have been on strike since October 7 demanding reinstatement of about 1,200 casual workers at the carmaker's Manesar plant along with 44 other permanent workers.
