Mayawati hikes sugarcane prices by Rs.40 per quintal by Atiq Khan

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday announced an increase of Rs.40 per quintal in the State Advised Price (SAP) of sugarcane for the 2010-11crushing season, which normally begins in November.

Describing the move as historic, Ms. Mayawati said such a hefty increase in the procurement price of the three varieties of sugarcane was the maximum, as none of the State governments had given so much raise.

The decision to raise the SAP was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet presided over by the Chief Minister. It comes against the backdrop of growing resentment among cane farmers over the delay in announcing the SAP. Political parties also raised their voice against the Mayawati government over the issue.

In fact, Rashtriya Lok Dal president Ajit Singh held a meeting in Moradabad on Tuesday over the cane price issue.

Ms. Mayawati said the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of cane fixed by the Centre at Rs.133.26 per quintal was not to the farmers' liking as it had failed to satisfy their demand for better returns for their produce.

The Chief Minister accused the Centre of lacking the political will to control the prices of foodstuffs and essential commodities. She refused to accept the charge that the State Government was responsible for the rising prices.

“Price control policies are formulated at the national level and have to be followed by the State governments. However, if the Centre shows the political will better polices can be formulated for controlling prices more effectively,” she said.

While the new SAP of early maturing variety has been fixed at Rs.210 per quintal, the common variety has been settled at Rs.205 per quintal and the rejected variety at Rs.200. In the last crushing season the SAP was Rs.170, Rs.165 and Rs.162.50 per quintal for the three varieties in the State. In the 2009-10 cane crushing season, an increase of Rs.25 in the SAP had been announced by the Bahujan Samaj Party-led government.

Directive to mill owners

The Chief Minister said directives had been given to mill owners to start crushing operations at the earliest. Simultaneously, district magistrates have been asked to sort out disputes, if any, by holding meetings with the mill owners and representatives of the growers for giving additional incentives.

Even though the new SAP shows an increase of Rs.40, it is much less than the actual cane price paid by the mill owners in the preceding crushing season. Some sugar mills in western UP are known to have paid Rs.260 to 270 per quintal in the 2009-10 season.

According to a senior official of the Chief Minister's Secretariat, only one sugar mill in western Uttra Pradesh has started crushing operations in the current season so far.
